Cavium
Networks OCTEON™ Network Services Processor for Internet
Services and Security Processing to Gain MontaVista Linux Support
Santa Clara, Ca., September 13,
2004 - Cavium Networks, the cost and performance leader
in content and security processing, today announced that Cavium
Networks OCTEON Network Services Processor family will be gaining
the support of MontaVista® Linux®, a widely used Linux-based
development platform. OCTEON NSPs deliver high-performance Layer
3 to Layer 7 networking functionality with a standard software-programming
model. The OCTEON Processors are being designed into a wide
variety of OEM networking equipment including routers, switches,
network-edge appliances with Firewall, VPN, IDS and Anti-Virus
functionality, secure intelligent switches with SSL, content
switches, XML switches, intelligent NICs, WLAN switches and
storage applications. MontaVista Linux already supports Cavium
Networks NITROX Security processors, which are shipping today
in a wide range of networking equipment.
"The flexibility
and tight integration of MontaVista Linux with the MIPS64-based
OCTEON NSPs will give networking equipment manufacturers a powerful
platform to rapidly develop highly differentiated products,"
said John Nielson, Director, Business Development, MontaVista
Software. "This combination of high performance network services,
content and security and the availability of standard software
applications will boost the rapid deployment of advanced features
into mainstream networking equipment across all price/performance
ranges."
"Today design engineers building high-performance
networking equipment cannot leverage the rich software tools
and applications available on Linux because networking data-plane
ASICs and processors do not support standard programming models,"
said Amer Haider, Director, Strategic Marketing, Cavium Networks.
"Cavium Networks MIPS64-based multi-core OCTEON Processors change
the networking landscape by enabling high-performance Layer3-Layer7
network services using Linux and standards based software in
a scalable processor family."
MontaVista Linux Professional Edition (Pro) 3.1 provides comprehensive
support for a very broad range of embedded processor architectures,
CPU boards and software components. Pro, which now targets more
than 30 processors from eight industry-leading architectures,
is among the most widely deployed embedded Linux platforms in
the market today.
MontaVista DevRocketT is a fully integrated and graphical development
environment, available with Pro, which is designed to facilitate
system software and applications development. MontaVista DevRocket,
based on Eclipse technology, provides a common look-and-feel
across development host platforms including Windows®, Solaris®
and Linux. MontaVista DevRocket is built on the latest Eclipse
base, letting customers and ISVs take full advantage of the
Eclipse platform, including third-party development work contributed
by the Eclipse community, as well as a multitude of Eclipse-supported
tools.
Availability
Cavium Networks OCTEON NSPs will be supported by MontaVista
Linux in early 2005 directly from MontaVista and MontaVista
distribution channels worldwide. MontaVista Linux is offered
as a product subscription, providing customers with the MontaVista
Linux kernel, utilities, development tools, software updates,
deployment components, access to the MontaVista Zone (customer
resource portal), comprehensive technical support and hands-on
Linux training classes.
