NetLogic
Microsystems and Cavium Networks Collaborate to Offer a
20 Gigabits-per-Second Reference Solution
Joint Platform from NetLogic Microsystems
and Cavium Networks Targets the Networking, Communications
and Wireless Markets
Mountain View, Calif., October 9, 2006 –
NetLogic Microsystems, Inc. [NASDAQ: NETL], the leader in
the design and development of knowledge-based processors,
and Cavium Networks, a worldwide leader in security, network
services and embedded processor solutions, today announced
the availability of a joint reference platform that incorporates
NetLogic Microsystems’ GLQ family of knowledge-based
processors and Cavium Networks’ OCTEON™ Multi-core
MIPS64® processor to provide a 20 Gigabits-per-second
(Gbps) reference solution. NetLogic Microsystems’ knowledge-based
processor enables network and application awareness by accelerating
high-performance packet/content inspection, flow classification,
access control list (ACL) security, Internet Protocol version
6 (IPv6) routing and quality of service (QoS) processing,
while Cavium Networks’ OCTEON Multi-core MIPS64 processor
performs advanced embedded networking functions. The collaborative
OCTEON-KBP Reference Design Kit is intended to speed customer
system development resulting in significantly reduced time
to market and system development costs.
The OCTEON-KBP Reference Design Kit is targeted at the
high-growth networking, communications, and wireless markets.
The joint platform offers significant power, performance
and time-to-market advantages for equipment vendors developing
next-generation routers, intelligent switches, multi-service
access equipment, 3G wireless infrastructure equipment,
Advanced Telecommunications Computing Architecture (ATCA)
systems, Advanced Mezzanine Cards (AMCs), network security
appliances, multi-protocol storage switches, and border
session gateways.
“We are excited to team with Cavium Networks to enable
advanced applications such as quadruple-play (convergence
of video, voice, data and mobility) to deliver unparalleled
performance for our customers,” said James McDermott,
director of marketing for NetLogic Microsystems. “By
offering pre-packaged hardware and software interoperability
with Cavium’s Multi-core MIPS64 based processor, NetLogic
Microsystems continues to extend its leadership position
in the knowledge-based processor market.”
The market-leading knowledge-based processors from NetLogic
Microsystems offer high-performance and advanced parallel
processing intelligence on packet-based protocols such as
IPv6 routing, virtual private LAN services (VPLS), policy-based
routing, per-flow and VoIP management required by customers
to develop next-generation systems. By employing an advanced
superscalar with deep pipelining architecture, the device
provides superior parallel processing capabilities and offers
leading-edge features and advanced low-power modes.
“For customers requiring very high performance ACLs
and route forwarding, Cavium Networks is pleased to offer
a comprehensive joint solution utilizing industry-leading
knowledge-based processors from NetLogic Microsystems,”
said Amer Haider, director of strategic marketing and eco-system
development at Cavium Networks. “As a result of our
close collaboration, we are providing significant benefits
to our common customers that include reduced customer engineering
costs and quick time to market.”
The OCTEON Multi-core MIPS64 processor family is a scalable
multi-core MIPS64 based processor family with 4 to 16 cores
on a single chip at up to 1GHz with integrated up to 8x
Gigabit Ethernet and/or up to 2x SPI4.2 networking interfaces,
integrated 144-bit 800-DDR2 memory controller, 1x or 2x
18bit RLDRAM memory controller with knowledge-based processor
connectivity and internal hardware acceleration for packet
processing, TCP, optional encryption, compression / decompression
and string matching.
The OCTEON-KBP Reference Design Kit supports the OCTEON
CN38XX as well as the recently announced OCTEON Plus CN58XX
with 2x SPI-4.2 interfaces that allow for 20 Gbps of networking
connectivity via pluggable daughter cards. The NetLogic
Microsystems knowledge-based processor is connected to the
OCTEON processor via a dedicated interface with an intermediate
FPGA. This jointly developed reference platform is the first
of a number of collaborative opportunities envisioned for
NetLogic Microsystems and Cavium Network.
Availability
The OCTEON-KBP Reference Design Kit is available
today from Cavium Networks. The knowledge-based processor,
software APIs and intermediate FPGA code are available directly
from NetLogic Microsystems.
