Cavium
Networks Demonstrates Industry-Leading Performance
for Enterprise and SMB/Home Storage Applications
at Storage Networking World Fall 2007
Mid-Range OCTEON™ Multi-Core MIPS64®
Processor Exceeds 40,000 Linux iSCSI IOPS-to-Disk
and Single/Dual-Core OCTEON Processor Delivers
60MB/s NAS Performance
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct.
15, 2007 – Cavium Networks (NASDAQ:
CAVM), a leading provider of highly integrated
semiconductor products that enable intelligent
processing for networking, communications, storage
and security applications, today announced it
is demonstrating extraordinary performance for
a wide spectrum of enterprise, data-center and
SMB/home storage applications using the Cavium
OCTEON Multi-core MIPS64 processor family. The
demonstration is in Cavium Networks’ booth
at the Storage
Networking World Conference, Oct. 15 to 18
in Dallas. Cavium’s OCTEON processors are
being designed into and targeted for an array
of storage applications such as Enterprise Disk
Arrays, Fiber-Channel to IP bridges, RAID Adapters,
Storage Switches, Service modules and SMB/Home
Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliances.
Cavium Networks’ OCTEON
Multi-core MIPS64 and the recently announced OCTEON
Multi-core Storage Services Processors (SSPs)
provide market-leading performance for network
storage applications. The OCTEON processor family
delivers two to four times more compute cycles
versus many alternatives and integrates advanced
hardware acceleration for RAID, compression, de-duplication,
security and iSCSI. The OCTEON family scales from
low-end solutions to very high performance SAN/NAS
systems, providing a flexible, software compatible
platform across a broad range of price and performance
points. Key OCTEON family features include integration
of 1-to -16 MIPS64 64-bit cores, storage application
acceleration, an array of high-speed input/output
interfaces, Gigabit Ethernet ports, DDR2 memory
controllers and innovative data protection mechanisms.
Cavium is demonstrating three
performance benchmarks at Storage Network World
2007, targeting a range of different storage equipment
designs:
1) Enterprise class NAS and SAN:
This demonstration consists of a 4-core OCTEON
Plus CN5830 processor in a 1U appliance from Movidis
running Linux with the iSCSI Enterprise Target
(IET) stack connected to SAS drives and serving
over 40,000 iSCSI IOPS-to-Disk. One 16-core OCTEON
can process up to 160,000 iSCSI IOPS-to-Disk or
640MB/s using standard Linux. Encryption can be
enabled with line rate performance. This performance
highlights OCTEON’s leading performance,
low cost and low power capabilities for Enterprise
storage OEM equipment.
2) Data-center Storage
and Solid State Disk Solutions: This
demonstration shows a 16-core OCTEON Plus CN5860
processor running Linux and performing over 2
Million virtual I/O operations per second (IOPS),
which is 3x to 10x the performance of several
deployed alternative processors. This showcases
OCTEON’s extreme IOPS processing power which
is useful for large, data-center disk arrays as
well as emerging solid-state-disks (SSD) that
require significantly higher IOP processing compared
to current hard-disk solutions.
3) SMB/Home NAS:
The third demonstration consists of a single-
and dual-core OCTEON processor running Linux and
Samba server connected to 4x SATA drives delivering
60MB/s of read and 40MB/s of write performance.
OCTEON also achieves the same level of performance
with RAID 5 for higher reliability designs. OCTEON
single and dual core processors deliver OEMs with
a low cost, high-performance NAS reference design
for Home and SMB markets.
